Watch a video about last year's African Diaspora Day and find out more about it ahead of this years event.
During its launch last year, the event attracted large crowds of people from Milton Keynes and surrounding towns. This year, the event is expected to attract even more people. The event will be an opportunity for local organisations to exhibit and showcase their products and services as well as to support and inspire young people by educating them about their own identity and heritage.
The aim of African Diaspora Day event is to build a stronger African community in Milton Keynes and wider community cohesion through the ‘UBUNTU’ (togetherness) concept; promoting culture, heritage, reduce isolation, promote identity and reduce antisocial behaviours, community cohesion, marketing and networking.
Friday will see the sharing of heritage and culture. Elders and young people from around the world will sit around a bonfire and share stories on how things used to be years ago and comparing them to life today. A range of activities and refreshments will be available on the day.
Saturday will offer a platform for those wanting to showcase their culture to a wider Milton Keynes audience. The day will be full of DJ music, guest speakers, performers, artists, acrobats and choirs. Plenty of food stalls, kids rides and face painting will also be available.
This years’ event has been supported by a range of local and national organisations – MK Community Foundation, The National Lottery, The Parks Trust, Thames Valley Police, Ugandan Embassy and Tanzanian Community, MK Dons and the Fire Services.
