Since 2017, the Parks Trust has led a citizen science project; MKHogwatch, encouraging schools to carry out hedgehog surveying on their school grounds or gardens.

As part of the project we will supply your school with a footprint tunnel, which you can use to carry out a hedgehog survey on your school grounds. The survey can be carried out anytime between April and end of June and only takes 5 days to complete!

Hedgehogs leave very distinctive footprints and these can be used to determine whether they are present at a site. Footprint tunnels are simple, plastic triangular tunnels with a removable insert to which A4 paper is attached and ink painted on either side of a dish of bait. As a hedgehog moves through the tunnel, it leaves footprints on the paper which can easily be identified.
