Students get to try their hand at different observation, surveying and measuring techniques used by geographers and scientists to monitor species and understand the natural world. Depending on your requirments this could include instruction in the use of transects, quadrats, microscopes, water quality testing, pellet or spraint dissection. Suitable for Key stage 3, 4 and 5.

How does this session link to the National Curriculum?

Key Stage 4 Geography - Applying geographical knowledge, understanding, skills and approaches appropriately and creatively to real world contexts, including fieldwork, and to contemporary situations and issues.

Key Stage 5 Geography - Understand how to observe and record phenomena in the field and be able to devise and justify practical approaches taken in the field, (including frequency/timing of observation, sampling, and data collection approaches), demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to undertake practical field methodologies appropriate to the investigation of core human and physical processes.

Key Stage 4 Science - Planning experiments to make observations, test hypotheses or explore phenomena, applying a knowledge of a range of techniques, apparatus, and materials to select those appropriate both for fieldwork and for experiments, carrying out experiments appropriately, having due regard to the correct manipulation of apparatus, the accuracy of measurements and health and safety considerations, recognising when to apply a knowledge of sampling techniques to ensure any samples collected are representative, making and recording observations and measurements using a range of apparatus and methods, evaluating methods and suggesting possible improvements and further investigations.

Key Stage 5 Science - know and understand how to use a wide range of experimental and practical
instruments, equipment and techniques, use appropriate apparatus to record a range of quantitative measurements (to include mass, time, volume, temperature, length and pH), use of light microscope at high power and low power, including use of a graticule.
