Calling local sculptors! Woodland Art Trail is set for revival
Published: 19/05/2026
The Parks Trust are excited to announce that they are accepting tenders for a new art piece at Linford Wood. The wooden sculpture will form the first part of a trail that will gradually emerge over the years to come. We’re seeking an inspiring design that sparks curiosity, connects people with the natural world, and draws visitors into the newly designated Explorer Area on the edge of the ancient woodland.
Linford Wood has had an art trail since the 1980s, when local artist, Jack Sephenson, carved animals, characters and mythological creatures from old stumps. People may remember the giant snake, chimpanzee, doves, or characters that were similar to Rupert the Bear and ET. They have naturally decayed with time, providing a home and food for minibeasts and fungi. Only two pieces, an owl high in the trees and a face in the log, remain.
We are pleased that this much-loved feature of the wood can be reinstated, and people will once again be able to discover animals in the wood.
