Endangered Species and their Habitats (KS2)
Discover the pressures local wildlife face and the endangered species in Milton Keynes in this outdoor learning session tailored for Key Stage 2.
Animals and their habitats are facing unbelievable pressures in today’s world, but it’s not too late to help. This session will introduce the concepts of endangered species, threats and conservation whilst also showing you real-life examples of habitat types in our local parks. We will learn all about some of the endangered species that call MK home, what we are doing to protect them, and how each of us are responsible for our own actions.
Please note that this session may be location specific. We are happy to trial the session in a number of parks, but you may prefer to bring your group to one of our more biodiverse sites where we have better examples of the conservation work being carried out by The Parks Trust. These may include Linford Lakes Nature Reserve, Howe Park Wood and Elfield Nature Park.
How does this session link to the National Curriculum? (Key Stage 2)
- Identify and name a variety of common plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats.
- Describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other.
- Describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain.
- Identify carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and name different sources of food.
- Explore the means by which animals can become rare in their environments, specifically due to human influence.
- Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.
