Snowdrops at Great Linford Manor Park
Eagle-eyed visitors to Great Linford Manor Park will have spotted snowdrops growing in the Wilderness area. These delicate flowers grow well in the long grass in this wilder area of the park, and in the "Ha Ha" ditch that runs from the Manor to the canal.
Experts think that snowdrops were brought over to to the UK from Southern Russia, Turkey and Southern Europe by the first great plant hunters in the Elizabethan era. Perhaps they were part of the exotic, original 17th or 18th century planting at Great Linford Manor Park!
Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers in 2019, clumps of the snowdrops have been spread across the Wilderness and have taken well under the centuries-old Lime tree on the canal's edge. During our restoration project at Great Linford Manor we are taking care to protect the snowdrop population and to improve its habitat. Visit Great Linford Manor Park to take a closer look or see where else you can spot snowdrops in Milton Keynes' parks, but watch where you are stepping as the snowdrops are very fragile and their shoots can be quite hidden. See them up until the end of February.
